Speed comparison: Site hosted locally vs distant hosting with CDN

A long standing piece of advice has been to try to host your website close to the site's audience to help with response times but, with the arrival of CDNs, how important is this advice these days? Vbcda's quandry comes from some speed tests he did on one of his websites hosted on a distant server using a network inspector tool on his browser, and then repeated the same after adding it to Cloudflare. Without CDN he saw that server response time for the root, images, CSS etc was 1.5-2 seconds. With Cloudflare CDN (free plan) added the response time for the same files dropped to 500-600ms. The point of doing all this was to help him decide on which hosting plan to purchase. He's narrowed down his choices to 2 companies offering similar specs but one of them has the server located within his country. The other company has better pricing but the server is located on a different continent. So should he pay more for the local server advantage or just go with the other company and use a CDN. Or are there other factors he should consider before making the final choice?

Managing server cost. How do they do it?

Hamza is trying to figure out how providers make money. If he were to get a server like a 7900x for around 130-140$ with 128Gb & 2x2Ttb NVMes, then add all the costs like cPanel license, CloudLinux, Imunify360, LiteSpeed, Jetbackup and external storage for backups, he's wondering how some providers are able to offer reseller hosting with 100 cPanel accounts, and all the other add-ons already mentioned, for maybe $30 to $40 per month. One answer is overselling, employed by many hosts but needing careful management to ensure that a server doesn't get overloaded or run out of space, others might run plans with this sort of pricing as loss leaders to upsell to or simply gain initial customers. The issue, however, is that this doesn't always work and hosts end up folding due to the lack of business coming in. Is there a magic formula to get overselling balanced correctly, or is it really all a bit of a gamble with some failing along the way?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially our Web Hosting Lounge. Here we highlight just a selection of some of the interesting items from around the forum:

  • Exa Infrastucture announces new hybrid New York and London route - The digital infrastructure firm has announced plans for a new hybrid microwave-fiber route between New York and London. While Exa already has the lowest latency transatlantic cable, Exa Express, the new hybrid route will be critical for its infrastructure to support additional use cases such as financial trading. The news follows Exa's investment in the Dunant, Havfrue and Amitie subsea cables, with its portfolio now providing customers with six distinct transatlantic routes and multiple landing points between North America and Europe. The route will also see microwave technology introduced between Equinix's Slough-LD4 data center, and Exa's cable landing station in Cork, Ireland.
  • Global Switch plans new London data center - This will be its third London, UK data center having been given approval to construct a new five floor, 27k sq m data center at its London data center campus. This will make Global Switch London's site one of Europe's largest.
  • AWS to invest $5B in new cloud infrastructure region in Mexico - By the beginning of 2025, AWS intends to establish a cloud infrastructure region in Mexico. To ensure that customers who wish to store their content in Mexico can do so, the new AWS Mexico (Central) Region will offer developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises, as well as government, education, and nonprofit organizations, more options for running their applications in the public cloud and serving end users from data centers located in Mexico. At debut, the new  Region will include three Availability Zones, bringing the total number on AWS to 105, spread across 33 different worldwide geographic areas. AWS aims to build five additional AWS Regions and fifteen more Availability Zones in Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • Prime Data Centers eyeing Austin, Texas data center build - The new data center, just outside of Austin, Texas, is ringing in a price tag of around $1.3 billion and would span 206 acres, and would be a "turn-key" data center campus. Prime's current portfolio is being centered around California, with campuses also in the works in Chicago, Illinois, and Phoenix, Arizona.
