A long standing piece of advice has been to try to host your website close to the site's audience to help with response times but, with the arrival of CDNs, how important is this advice these days? Vbcda's quandry comes from some speed tests he did on one of his websites hosted on a distant server using a network inspector tool on his browser, and then repeated the same after adding it to Cloudflare. Without CDN he saw that server response time for the root, images, CSS etc was 1.5-2 seconds. With Cloudflare CDN (free plan) added the response time for the same files dropped to 500-600ms. The point of doing all this was to help him decide on which hosting plan to purchase. He's narrowed down his choices to 2 companies offering similar specs but one of them has the server located within his country. The other company has better pricing but the server is located on a different continent. So should he pay more for the local server advantage or just go with the other company and use a CDN. Or are there other factors he should consider before making the final choice?
Hamza is trying to figure out how providers make money. If he were to get a server like a 7900x for around 130-140$ with 128Gb & 2x2Ttb NVMes, then add all the costs like cPanel license, CloudLinux, Imunify360, LiteSpeed, Jetbackup and external storage for backups, he's wondering how some providers are able to offer reseller hosting with 100 cPanel accounts, and all the other add-ons already mentioned, for maybe $30 to $40 per month. One answer is overselling, employed by many hosts but needing careful management to ensure that a server doesn't get overloaded or run out of space, others might run plans with this sort of pricing as loss leaders to upsell to or simply gain initial customers. The issue, however, is that this doesn't always work and hosts end up folding due to the lack of business coming in. Is there a magic formula to get overselling balanced correctly, or is it really all a bit of a gamble with some failing along the way?
