Web Hosting Panel Recommendations

Vojta702 has been primarily focused on hosting game servers up to now, but now would like to focus mainly on web hosting. He asks what members think is a good panel for web hosting (ideally free), or for any recommendations on which features he should focus on? In the past he's only tried ISPConfig and Virtualmin, but members are quick to try to steer him away from free panels and encourage him to look at the more "main stream" paid offerings. As often happens on WHT, the proponents, defenders and condemners of the various available control panels were quick to join this thread and share their opinions, which explains why it's attracting so much interest - The read count is soaring and there have been approaching 100 replies in a little over a week! Come and see the latest points of debate about control panels and add your own.

I want to say it MY way!

Ryan asks if he's alone in this but, as various AI tools permeate more of his online life, he's been pushed to change the tone of his online 'voice' more and more. Whether Grammarly, ChatGPT and its various implementations, or other tools, his online 'speech patterns' have been changing. Of course, there are numerous benefits to this (otherwise why would we bother using these tools), which he's not going to bother to list, but he's been finding himself almost resenting the implied inadequacy of his own writing skills. That being said, he's certainly not going to stop using these tools but has decided to just embrace this subtle criticism, aside from obvious corrections (spelling, duplicate words, punctuation, etc), and hang on to his own 'voice' as much as possible. He's not having a dig at these tools, or even the situation itself, but finds the psychological impact and the overall 'voice' change in himself and others to be quite interesting if a bit (helpfully) annoying. He finds himself glaring at some of the suggested corrections, which he knows is a bit absurd (or is it?), but it's his unrighteous indignation, and he'll express himself how he likes. Have you found yourself in a similar situation? AI is certainly here to stay, and has some important contributions to make, but many feel that it steals your personality embedded in your spoken and written words. How do you feel? (And please use your own words when you reply!).

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially our Web Hosting Lounge. Here we highlight just a selection of some of the interesting items from around the forum:

  • Windstream Wholesale trials 1 Tbps wavelength over 1,100km - A trial illustrating the growing potential of coherent optics transmitted a 1 Tbps wavelength over a 1,100-kilometer link across multiple routes on Windstream's Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON). Windstream Wholesale leveraged Cisco's NCS 1014 C-Band 2.4T WDM Transponder Line Card with Acacia's Coherent Interconnect Module (CIM) 8, a 1.2Tbps faceplate pluggable coherent solution. The trial deployments achieved wavelength transmissions across key Windstream ICON routes: roundtrip transport of 1Tbps over 1,100 km from Miami to Jacksonville, Florida; transport of 800G over 1,387 km of mixed fiber from Miami through Tallahassee, Florida, to Atlanta, Georgia, and; roundtrip transport of 600G over 2,774 km from Miami, Florida, to Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Exa announces 6th subsea cable, partners with NJFX - Exa Infrastructure unveiled its sixth transatlantic subsea cable route, Amitié, and also announced a new partnership with NJFX. Amitié connects the hubs in Boston, MA in the states, Slough, UK and Bordeaux in France. Exa will also establish a new point-of-presence at NJFX's facility, and announced a partnership with Bulk for the Havfrue cable system. EXA will integrate Havfrue with their pan-European backbone network to provide direct connectivity to the Nordics.
  • Two Filipino companies partner for fiber and subsea cable sharing - Converge and Dito announced a partnership last week that will see them share subsea cable and fiber. Converge has 682,000km of fiber and is in more than 16 million homes. Dito is the Philippines' third major telecom operator since 2021, owns more than 7,000 towers, supports 9.5 million subscribers and reaches over 80% of the population. The two companies said the resource exchange arrangement will strengthen both of their networks, expanding coverage and increasing redundancy.
  • Arelion PoP goes live in Tokyo - They've established a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Tokyo, Japan, at AT TOKYO's carrier-neutral data center. The new location, Chuo Center #1, happens to be one of Japan's largest data centers with 31 MW. This is Arelion's second Tokyo PoP and third Japan PoP after its Osaka PoP. The new PoP will expand Arelion's reach for wholesale and enterprise customers in Japan and the APAC region, offering access to its global Internet backbone AS1299 and cloud, content, and security services ecosystem.
