Could 2023 be the year of public cloud repatriation?

Veteran WHTer "net" found a thought provoking article suggesting that, with cloud costs and complexity higher than expected, many enterprises are making a U-turn and putting applications and data back in traditional systems. The article goes on to assert that this is a topic that we don't discuss as much as we should: public cloud repatriation. Many regard repatriating data and applications back to enterprise data centers from a public cloud provider as an admission that someone made a big mistake moving the workloads to the cloud in the first place. Do you agree? This a good read for both providers and enterprises, worth 10 minutes of your time, and likely to provoke some interesting comments in the thread.

Top 5 payment methods accepted for webhosting

WebsitePlex asks a simple question: "What are the top 5 payment methods accepted for web hosting?". PayPal and one of the card processing companies are the obvious answers, but which processing companies work best, and where, and which take a dislike to our industry and won't accept applications? What about crypto currencies and wire transfers? The answers will vary dependent on geography since payment handlers, including PayPal, are not available across all countries. If you're planning to add your list of favorites to the thread, please remember to include your location and explain why certain payment processors work better than others for you.

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just some of the interesting news items from around the forum:

  • Chinese hackers exploiting open source remote administration tool - DragonSpark has been exploiting the open source remote administration tool (RAT) SparkRAT in recent attacks. SparkRAT is a fairly new RAT that can run on Windows, Linux, and macOS systems, and can update itself with new versions made available through its command and control (C&C) server. The threat supports over 20 commands that can be used to do malicious activities such as taking control of the infected machine.
  • HostDime seeks to raise $100M for data center builds - CEO Manny Vivar is engaging with investors to raise $100 million or more to scale the company. HostDime was founded 20 years ago and has data center facilities in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and its flagship facility in Florida, USA, and with owned networks in the UK, India, and Hong Kong.
  • Microsoft cloud outage blamed on router updates - The outages at Azure and other cloud services lasted five hours last week, and have been traced to rapid BGP router updates. Unstable border-gateway routing tables led to high packet loss, leaving Microsoft customers unable to reach Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and other services. According to an analysis, multiple Microsoft BGP prefixes were withdrawn completely and then almost immediately readvertised, leading to routing changes causing significant packet loss.
  • Ransomware gang Hive's servers seized in Los Angeles - U.S. and European law enforcement agencies seized the infrastructure behind ransomware operator Hive last week. The FBI had access to Hive's computer network since July of last year, allowing feds to capture and offer Hive's decryption keys to victims worldwide. They dismantled Hive's front- and back-end infrastructure in the U.S. and abroad, including two of Hive's back-end servers located in Los Angeles. It is unknown how the FBI identified the servers, and no arrests or indictments have been announced.
