Do you block any WordPress plugins serverwide?

Chris suggests that most shared and reseller hosting providers use LiteSpeed, including LSCache and Imunify360, yet some clients try to use lots of unnecessary plugins which can cause many issues on the server and even slow the clients' websites down. Some try to use WPBenchMark which has a reputation for creating lots of tmp files which can soon use up substantial disk space. There's also AutoOptimize, caching plugins, etc., that are not as effective as LScache. Some customers can also (unnecessarily) use 3 or 4 security plugins at the same time, even when Imunify360 is running, and then wonder why their site can be slow! So Chris' question to server admins is "Are there any plugins that you block in WordPress Toolkit server-wide?" Share your experiences in the thread.

Backup ownership of hosting accounts or websites

Kerry runs a small web hosting business just using reseller hosting. He's semi-retired, and the thought occurs to him: What will happen with his clients if he gets hit by a bus? Nobody in his family is technically adept to take over - They can own it and pocket the money, but that's the end of their skills. There isn't enough business to afford an employee yet. Whilst it might not be something that we think about regularly, it's worth considering what might happen to your business and especially your clients if you, as a sole proprietor, suddenly became unavailable for any reason. Do you have emergency plans? You don't need to be a host to consider them since you might own and operate an important product, community or news site, for example. What would happen if you're suddenly unavailable?

The benefits of bare metal cloud for edge computing

The use of edge computing in the modern business landscape has become increasingly popular due to its ability to process and analyze data at the point of origin.

To this end, many companies are turning to “bare metal” cloud services, also called BMaaS (Bare Metal Cloud-as-a-Service), to gain greater control over their infrastructure without sacrificing performance or security.

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just some of the interesting news items from around the forum:

  • Twitter shuts down Sacramento data center - In an effort to reduce operating expenses, Twitter has closed its data center in Sacramento. Twitter staffers disconnected the data center just days before the company experienced a widespread outage that lasted several hours affecting more than 10,000 users in the U.S. Three people familiar with Twitter's systems believe that the Sacramento data center could have helped mitigate the outage by providing backup infrastructure. The two remaining facilities are located in Atlanta and Portland.
  • OpenMetal establishes European footprint in Amsterdam for cloud services - This move allows OpenMetal to introduce its On-Demand Private Clouds, built on OpenStack, to new European customers, as well as companies looking for a European presence. An arm of InMotion Hosting focused on private clouds enabled by OpenStack, OpenMetal has two US-based locations in Ashburn with Equinix and in Los Angeles at Digital Realty.
  • Green Mountain constructs new Oslo data center - This is the third data center on its campus that Norway's Green Mountain expanded. The first two 4MW facilities are used by one tenant while the third is for multipe customers. The new data center is a 13.5MW building designed as a colocation facility, is 10,000 square metres and three floors high.
  • SpaceX deploys 54 upgraded Starlink internet satellites - A Falcon 9 rocket topped with 54 upgraded Starlink internet satellites, the first generation 2 (Gen2) versions of the SpaceX fleet, launched early last Wednesday morning from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Under its new licence, SpaceX is now able to deploy satellites to new orbits that will add even more capacity to the network enabling more customers to be serviced and faster service delivered, particularly in areas that are currently oversubscribed.
