Best ways to store passwords

ResellerFly would like to know how best to store server administrators passwords, and all those other important logins. He manages hosting accounts, servers and so on and it is hard to remember all this. While he's less concerned about email passwords, he needs to ensure that he has the servers' root access kept safe. Do you maintain a local file, use a piece of password management software, or have a custom solution of your own? Some members suggest proprietary software, but how much trust do you put in storing such critical data with a third party provider online? How is your choice affected by the need to share password data with staff at other locations? There's already a multitude of suggestions in the thread, so have a read and suggest your own.

The power outage at Prime/Carrier1/Evocative Dallas DC affecting multiple providers

Sunday saw massive storms and tornadoes hitting Texas, sadly resulting in a number of fatalities and causing large scale damage and power outages. The Prime/Carrier1/Evocative datacenter at 1515 Round Table was badly affected when, it appears from reports so far, automatic transfer switches failed to successfully transfer power to UPS and generators causing a total power blackout. Many providers were affected including (and this is by no means a full list) Cogent, Webhostpython, VersaWeb, HiVelocity, tier.net, TailorMadeServers, Psychz, HostUS, ExonHost, TotalChoice, Hostrush, Servercheap, and more. It appears that a number services are still being restored and, hopefully, RFOs will be available soon to explain how the failover systems didn't take over when needed. Were you affected?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially our Web Hosting Lounge. Here we highlight just a selection of some of the interesting items from around the forum:

  • White House backs nuclear energy for data centers - The WH Office of Science and Technology Policy is backing nuclear power – including small modular reactors – as a reliable and sustainable energy source for data centers. About two years ago, nuclear energy was unwelcome at the energy table. How things have changed. One of the keynotes at Data Center World 2024 was delivered by Rian Bahran, Ph.D., Assistant Director of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He offered a broadening of the definition of clean energy to include nuclear. This has opened the door to a reversal of the long-term trend of closing nuclear power facilities — as well as heightened advocacy for onsite nuclear power in large data centers. It may be feasible for a large colo or hyperscaler to adopt their own SMR. But the price tag may be beyond most data center operators. Bahran envisions a business model whereby several data centers may group around one SMR to achieve economies of scale.
  • Cologix launches AI-ready data center in Ohio - This will be Cologix's fourth data center in the state of Ohio, USA. This new data center opened in Columbus, OH and marks Cologix's commitment to meeting the growing demand for colocation and interconnection services in the region. Cologix currently is the largest colocation and interconnection provider in the area with a portfolio of four data centers spanning a total of 500,000 square feet and 80 MW of power.
  • Prime Data Centers plans Madrid data center - They've unveiled plans for a 26,000 square meter data center in Madrid, Spain. 7.6 acres have been secured in Alcobendas, which is the largest in-country data center ecosystem with 41 percent of the live, colocation power consumption. The facility is planned to deliver 40 megawatts of critical power.
  • team.blue expands European presence with acquisition of Loopia Group - team.blue, a large web hosting provider and digital enabler in Europe for entrepreneurs and small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), has announced the strategic acquisition of Loopia Group, a leading provider of digital presence solutions in the Nordics and Central Eastern Europe (CEE). This acquisition marks a significant expansion for team.blue, enhancing its reach and capabilities in key European markets.
