Reseller recommendations for a new start up

Go back 23 years to the earliest days of WHT and sifuhall - member number 3157 (we're up in the 800 thousands now!) - joined WHT. He's been in and out of the hosting business, seen a few bumps along the way, sold his business and left a decade ago, and now he's back again! Now he's looking to get back into hosting with focus on providing sites for local businesses and helping them grow. He's starting again from the ground up and and would like recommendations for reseller accounts that can grow with him. His clients will primarily have Wordpress based sites. He's listed some of his preferences, including going with a host that's active here on WHT, and hopes for some recommendations from members. When he signs off his post with "Love you all!" how can you not chip in with some ideas for him?

NVMe Lifespan

abirkhan75 has been dealing with a reputable company for several years with almost no issues, but the most recent server he's received is equipped with a Samsung NVMe drive that displays "Data Units Written: 1.44 PB" on smartctl on a drive with a capacity of 960GB. He'd like to understand if it's advisable to use this drive as the primary one and what its lifespan might be, and asks if anyone could provide insights into the longevity of NVMe drives? There are already some posts advising to what limit it might be a good idea to restrict drive usage to, but they vary. Is there an accepted usage beyond which you would not recommend going, particularly on newer drives where there isn't historical data available yet?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially our Web Hosting Lounge. Here we highlight just a selection of some of the interesting items from around the forum:

  • Google's subsea cable provides option during West African outage - Last Friday four submarine cables running along the coast of West Africa were damaged or experienced downtime, leading to internet outages in numerous countries across the region. The impacted cables noted at the time included the WACS, MainOne, SAT3 and ACE systems, with the faults apparently occurring somewhere off the coast of Cote D’Ivorie. Google's Equiano cable was recognized as an alternative option for traffic to cross the West African coast with a well known South African carrier and Seacom reportedly using the Equiano cable. The Equiano cable went live about a year ago and lands in Togo and Namibia.
  • Microsoft ends fees for departing customers after AWS and Google did - MS announced last week that it will end some egress fees for its Azure cloud computing services. This move follows similar and recent decisions by competitors AWS and Google Cloud. Microsoft announced that Azure now offers free egress for customers moving their data out of the platform, whether it's to another cloud provider or an on-premises data center.
  • AWS to invest $5.3B in Saudi Arabia cloud expansion - AWS plans to open a new cloud infrastructure region in 2026 in Saudi Arabia, investing over $5.3 billion. This expansion would support a broad range of sectors by providing local data centers, ensuring in-country content storage for customers. At debut, the new AWS Region will include three Availability Zones, bringing the total number of AWS Availability Zones across 33 worldwide geographic areas to 105. AWS plans to create 18 new Availability Zones and six more AWS Regions in Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • Nordic super fiber cable is complete - GlobalConnect announced the completion of construction of its 2,600km super fiber cable. The cable can transport all data in the Nordics and the project is valued at $96.7M USD. It will serve as a key infrastructure route between the Nordics and mainland Europe, running from Northern Sweden to Berlin across three countries. It covers Sweden to Denmark and from Denmark to Germany, including a 700km subsea cable. During construction, in order to establish the landing site in Germany, more than 200 bombs from WW2 had to be removed from the Baltic Sea.
