Best hosting for e-commerce websites?

One of our new members is currently on the lookout for a dependable and high-speed web hosting provider for his online store, and would love some recommendations and/or details of positive experiences with this type of hosting. He's feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available. Of course, some more details about the site he's planning to host are needed, with the usual questions posted about preferred location, size of site, number of products being listed, budget, etc. As often happens on WHT, the discussion opens up to a more general conversation about the current processors available (Ryzen CPUs in particular), and the ongoing Intel v AMD debate. So, whether you have experience of running online e-commerce websites, or how different CPUs handle such sites, come and share your expertise in the thread.

Email Hosting Options

Joseph is looking for the most robust and fully featured options for email hosting, and would also like to know which email hosting providers are the most competitively priced. His priority is a functioning webmail interface with IMAP/SMTP access. After a number of suggestions covering well known options such as GMail or Zoho, other email-only providers like Migadu and Mxroute, and the suggestion that he could use a regular hosting account's email features, he's still comparing features, ease of use, reliability and storage. It doesn't sound like he's considered a regular hosting account's email features as an option and is asking if they generally use an off-the-shelf email hosting solution that is often the same (or similar) to other hosting providers, or are there any particular hosting companies better suited with a superior email product compared to other hosts? Can you help him figure out the best solution for his needs?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just a selection of some of the interesting items from around the forum:

  • Researchers reveal Chrome extensions stealing passwords - Despite compliance with Chrome's latest security and privacy standard Manifest V3, it has been demonstrated that Chrome browser extensions can steal passwords from the text input fields in websites. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison created a proof of concept browser extension that could steal passwords and put it through the Chrome Web Store review process. Although Manifest V3 does help with malicious extensions trying to steal passwords, they proved it's still possible to get a password-stealing extension through the review process.
  • Data center execs discuss alternative power solutions as demand soars - At the Datacloud USA event this week in Austin, Texas, data center executives tackled the topic of power constraints in data center design and operations. One big takeaway from the panel is that hydrogen and nuclear-powered data centers are a possibility for the future. The demand for power in the US market is expected to skyrocket, with consumption projected to reach 35 gigawatts by 2030, almost doubling from the 17 gigawatts recorded in 2022.
  • VIRTUS launches Berlin data center campus as part of European expansion - Their new Wustermark Data Centre Campus is located in the Berlin Brandenburg data center region, which it claims is one of the fastest growing European data center markets. This project sets a new benchmark in mega scale data center capacity for cloud and AI in Europe, and offers an innovative approach to the use of sustainable power, waste heat re-use and technology, they say. The company committed to making the waste heat of the campus available to the local municipality and supporting its project to deliver a future district heating distribution network for Wustermark.
  • Africa requires connectivity commitment for future global workforce - The ITW Africa event in Kenya kicked off this week with its opening keynote addressing steps toward meaningful connectivity to Africa's youth. Telkom Kenya's CEO revealed trends indicating Africa will be home to 40% of the global workforce by 2100. Mugo Kibati explained that a full ecosystem is required, with all Africans able to access broadband as well as mobile internet and connect over a fast, reliable and secure network. To support the innovation required to connect Africa's youth, he called on regulators to supply policy that was conducive to change.
