CentOS 7 EOL and Cpanel

Like many of us, Udaya is concerned about the upcoming CentOS 7 EOL and how best to migrate a Cpanel setup to an alternative operating system. Cpanel have announced that they will stop supporting CentOS 7 from mid-2024, which might seem a long way off, but better to prepare now and perform a well organised migration at our own pace rather than wait till the last minute. So, have you decided on which OS to move to? Will you use the cPanel ELevate Project script to upgrade an existing cPanel & WHM CentOS 7 server installation to AlmaLinux 8 or Rocky Linux 8, or are you wary of what might break and prefer to make the move yourself. Are AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux, the most similar to CentOS, the only alternatives, particularly as CentOS Stream will now be the sole repository for public RHEL-related source code releases? What are your plans for migration or, if you already switched away from CentOS, which OS did you opt for and how did the move go?

Stackpath CDN and Highwinds CDN to shut down

This week an email was sent out to customers: "We have some important news to share. StackPath has decided to commit its entire focus to being the industry's best cloud computing platform built at the Internet's edge. With this decision, we will discontinue our StackPath CDN and legacy Highwinds CDN products. StackPath CDN and Highwinds CDN services will cease operations at 12:00 AM Central (midnight), November 22, 2023.". There's some mixed reactions in the thread, with several posters remarking that they were unimpressed with the service, but Akamai were quick to announce that it acquired assets including about 100 enterprise customer contracts from StackPath, adding approximately $20M in revenue for Akamai. The transaction does not include the acquisition of StackPath personnel or technology and the two companies will be operating under a transition services agreement for the first 90 days. Are you affected?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just some of the interesting news items from around the forum:

  • DDoS attacks up 200% in a year - Global communications infrastructure provider Zayo announced its annual Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Insights Report last week. It analyzes DDoS attack activity and impact across industries in the first half of 2023. DDoS attack activity increased nearly four times from Q1 to Q2 2023 due to increased automation. Key findings highlight a 314% increase in overall attacks in that timeframe and a 387% increase in attack activity from Q1 to Q2 of 2023. The telecommunications industry saw the most frequent attacks, roughly half of the total attack volume, with more than 37,000 attacks in the first half of 2023.
  • Liquid cooling on the rise for data centers - According to a new report the increasing demand for things like artificial intelligence, 5G networks and IoT will drive the need for cooling solutions in the data center market. While the global data center liquid cooling market size was valued at $3.56B in 2022, it is expected to reach $31B in 2031. The need for additional tools to monitor liquid leaks will raise the cost of deploying liquid cooling technology.
  • Scala builds its first Mexican data center - The Latin American provider of sustainable data centers in the hyperscale market is investing $80M in its first data center in Mexico, reporting it will be located in the municipality of Tepotzotlán, about 25 miles from the country's capital in Mexico City (CDMX), and will have an initial critical capacity of 5MW with 142,133 sqft of built area. Operations should begin later this year, having already anchored a large hyperscale client.
  • Cloudflare to boost SpaceX Starlink service - SpaceX is working with Cloudflare to boost the performance of SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink. The companies are collaborating to increase Starlink's terrestrial network of mini data centers around the world to help deliver faster network speeds. Starlink had 1.5 million subscribers as of May.
