General hosting questions

Robiro, a WHTer since 2010, has been out of the hosting game for a number of years and is now looking at reseller hosting (probably) to host some sites. His 4 main points that he'd like some feedback on go like this: Firstly, he has a few sites which target German speaking audiences whilst most of the others target US markets. He wonders if geotargetting is still a thing and, since he hopes to only need a single reseller account, would he be OK hosting everything on the US east coast? Next, he asks if reseller hosting is still a good way of hosting multiple websites when he wants a clean directory structure and separation for each of his sites? His third question asks for a comparison between DirectAdmin and cPanel/WHM, and does DA have the same Softaculous scripts and functionalities like cPanel? Finally, he wants to know about WordPress Toolkit Deluxe and asks if it's been widely implemented among hosting providers and good enough for creating a clone for each site into a staging environment to test WP updates or plugins etc., or are special staging/cloning plugins still recommended? His alternative might be Softaculous as a staging tool if it's reliable enough for creating clones or dev sites. There are already a number of replies but for experienced resellers, or customers who use reseller accounts because of their features over regular hosting, what further input can you bring to help Robiro in his research?

Finding a WordPress blog hosting provider

New member Thekeyboardkid is trying to find what he describes as "a WordPress blog hosting provider in a sea of sketchy providers" and wants recommendations on who to use. His plan is to start a very basic cybersecurity blog using WordPress but, unfortunately, it seems to him that the market is saturated with bought and paid for positive reviews and sketchy practices. Fortunately he's now found WHT so he's turning to us, his new-found "internet stranger experts", for advice on some legitimate hosting providers. He's identified a likely host but has reservations about how it seems too good to be true. His needs are nothing out of the ordinary: US-based, a "free" domain included, free SSL, projected visitors are somewhere in the dozens to the hundreds, and he's hoping for a reasonable cost for his small use case, less than $10/month preferrably. Can we point him in the right direction?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just some of the interesting news items from around the forum:

  • Zayo partners for US and Mexico connectivity - Zayo has teamed up with Mexican long-haul dark fiber infrastructure firm Fermaca to deliver "modern and diverse" connectivity between the US and Mexico. The partnership will leverage this route from Fermaca and Zayo's redundant route north of the border to provide customers with secure and diverse cross-border connectivity. Fermaca is launching a new long-haul dark fiber route in Mexico in 2025 which will be the longest in the country in 20 years. It will offer access through Queretaro - one of the most important data center hubs in Mexico and North America - with a diverse border crossing through El Paso, Texas.
  • Khazna planning Egypt data center - The UAE data center firm is expanding into Egypt with a new data center in Cairo. The data center will offer 25MW of capacity, with plans for expansion of up to 50MW, across 40,000 sqm (430,550 sq ft). Construction is planned to start later this year and should wrap up in 2026. Khazna will be partnering with local IT firm Benya Group for the $250 million data center. The two companies are aiming to develop more data centers in Egypt.
  • Kao expands with Manchester data center build - The high-performance data center firm announced a 40 megawatt (MW) data center in Manchester, UK last week. This move follows two data center acquisitions last year and will mark the first of its new Tier II locations in Europe. The new data center will be online in late 2025 providing space for nine data halls. Kao states this will create a leading infrastructure hub to support Greater Manchester's growing technology ecosystem and the UK's largest high performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors outside of London and the Oxford-Cambridge arc.
  • Google Cloud releases new A3 supercomputer VMs for machine learning loads - They stated that A3 GPU VMs were purpose-built to deliver the highest-performance training for today's ML workloads, complete with modern CPU, improved host memory, next-generation Nvidia GPUs and major network upgrades. The Nvidia GPUs combined with a specialized data center derive immense computational power with high throughput and low latency, all at what they suggest is a more reasonable price point than you would typically pay for such a package. These machines can provide up to 26 exaFlops of power.
