Free and paid SSL certificates

TTGT points out that, these days, many sites offer free SSL cerificates for clients, but feels it's slower to get SSL certificates from cPanel's AutoSSL, and asks if it's the same for LetsEncrypt. He's also interested in comparing free and paid certificates - Paid certificates come with a warranty but do those make any difference if a site is hacked? The thread goes on to discuss whether paid SSLs are still needed, perhaps forgetting that they generally include more than free SSLs, like including domain ownership validation. What's your take? Are paid SSL certificates due to become a thing of the past, or do you have a strong reason to continue using them?

Apache or Nginx Web Server for a WordPress installation?

A new member is running a VPS to host 2 WordPress based WooCommerce sites currently running on Apache web server. He was thinking of switching to NGINX as he's read it has better performance compared to Apache. He wonders if switching to NGINX would affect the website installations and will they continue to perform normally, or will there be problems that need resolving. He also asks what performance changes he could expect by switching to NGINX. Mentioned early in the discussion is Litespeed, which should improve performance whilst staying with Apache, especially if using its WordPress cache plugin. So it looks like we have 3 choices of configuration. Which do you have experience of and recommend?

News from around the hosting industry

Our Industry News section is the place to find current headlines from around the world of hosting and infrastructure, but other general interest threads pop up in other sections of the forum, especially The Lounge. Here we we highlight just some of the interesting news items from around the forum:

  • Almost 15000 WordPress sites infected with malware - A new report finds that more than 14000 WordPress users have had their systems infected with malware which placed advertisements of a fraudulent nature on their sites, redirecting victims to fake question-and-answer pages, similar to Ask Jeeves and Quora. These sites contained huge amounts of infected files. It's unclear how the malware is injected into the WordPress systems, but once activated it works by exploiting URL-shortening websites like bit.ly which feature in the Google AdSense adverts served up on many sites. The truncated URL will redirect to the wrong place, in this case to a bogus Q&A site. WordPress files are the most commonly affected files in the campaign.
  • GoDaddy admits multi-year security compromise - Hackers stole company source code, customer and employee login credentials, and installed malware that redirected customer websites to malicious sites. Most recently the threat actor gained access to the cPanel hosting servers that GoDaddy customers use to manage their websites. GoDaddy states that it has evidence, confirmed by law enforcement, that the incident has been carried out by a sophisticated and organized group targeting hosting services with the intent of infecting websites and servers with malware for phishing campaigns, malware distribution, and other malicious activities.
  • RETN adds routes to Warsaw network - The Eurasian network infrastructure provider has added two diverse routes into Equinix WA2 Warsaw data center, close to Warsaw airport, as well as a first route to EdgeConneX’s WA2. RETN stated that the added fiber ring makes for greater resilience and improved redundancy on the RETN metro network, allowing clients to use diverse fiber pairs between any two DCs on the metro ring architecture. In addition to its primary services, RETN can now offer dark fiber services that allow for almost limitless capacity.
  • World's largest solar-powered data center opens in Dubai - The green data center belongs to Data Hub Integrated Solutions LLC (Moro Hub), recognized as the world's largest solar-powered data center by the Guinness World Records. The facility is located at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world. The facility's integrated solutions are designed to provide next-generation services in the areas of digital transformation, cloud and hosting services, cybersecurity, smart cities, IoT services and professional and managed services, as well as Moro services supported by ChatGPT technology.
