Late-paying clients - What's the best way to handle them?

Cornishman is a UK photographer who also designs and hosts websites for local businesses. His normal process is to build the website and then charge for 12 months hosting, all in one invoice. The challenge comes a year later, with a minority of customers, when it's renewal time. There's a small number of habitual late payers and there is always an excuse, but generally they just go quiet until he's forced to follow up a couple of times. There's a balance to maintain between being amicable with existing customers and drawing a line on how far to extend credit before, for example, suspending a site. This story must be familiar to all hosts, especially to those that add other services like design, and each has their own policy on how to handle overdue accounts. So, is there a magic formula or an innovative way to handle these late payers? Share your thoughts in the thread.

Website monitoring recommendations

ChaoscripT is looking for a free website monitoring service that offers 1 minute checks. There's already several recommendations in the thread, but how reliable are free monitors, do they go down themselves, and is just monitoring a URL enough? Many services offer to monitor specific IPs, ports, look for unexpected changes in specific pages, even checking other services like email and deliverability/blacklisting. For business sites monitoring just a URL is likely to be insufficient so what are the priorities? Which best practises do you adopt and recommend?
